Local SEO for dental clinics: how to win the Google 3-pack

Kairos Media Team7 min read

Patients pick from three names on a map. Here's what decides which three, and what a Pune clinic can change this month.

Somebody with a toothache searches 'dentist near me' and picks from the three clinics in the map box. They do not scroll. For a dental practice, appearing in those three slots is close to the whole of local marketing, and a clinic on the same street can be invisible while a competitor two kilometres away takes the calls.

What actually decides the three

Google weighs three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your clinic, so distance is fixed. Relevance and prominence are entirely within your control, and most practices neglect both.

The 2026 local ranking factor surveys put roughly 32% of map-pack weight on Google Business Profile signals and around 20% on reviews. Together that is over half the outcome sitting in a free tool that takes an afternoon to set up properly.

Categories decide which searches you appear for

Your primary category is the highest-leverage field in the entire profile. 'Dentist', 'Dental clinic', 'Cosmetic dentist', 'Orthodontist' and 'Dental implants provider' surface for different queries. Pick the primary category that matches your highest-value treatment, then add the others as secondary.

Reviews: the system, not the scramble

Review count, recency, rating and your replies all feed ranking. The practices that win treat it as a routine, not a campaign.

  • Ask at the chair, right after treatment, while the relief is fresh.
  • Send a direct review link over WhatsApp. Every extra tap loses people.
  • Reply to all of them. A calm, non-defensive reply to a bad review persuades more readers than the five-star ones above it.
  • Never buy reviews. Google detects clusters and filters them, and you lose the ones you earned honestly alongside them.

Treatment pages beat a services list

One page listing eleven treatments ranks for none of them. A page per treatment — root canal, implants, aligners, whitening — with the price band, the process, how long it takes and what recovery looks like, gives Google something specific to match and gives AI assistants something to quote. Name the locality in the copy where it reads naturally, not eleven times.

The order to do it in

  • Claim and complete the Business Profile. Categories, hours, services, photos.
  • Build the review routine. Two a month sustained beats twenty in a burst.
  • Write the top three treatment pages.
  • Fix name, address and phone consistency across Justdial, Practo, Sulekha and your own site.
  • Only then consider paid ads.

Clinics reliably do this backwards — ads first, profile last. Ads stop the day you stop paying. The profile compounds.
