The Google Business Profile mistake costing you the map pack

Kairos Media Team7 min read

Business Profile signals carry about a third of local map-pack ranking weight. Most Pune businesses haven't claimed one, or filled it in wrong.

If you sell to people who live near you, the three businesses in the Google Maps box sit above every organic result on the page. Everything below that box is competing for leftovers. Yet most Pune service businesses we audit either have no Google Business Profile at all, or one that was claimed once in 2022 and never touched again.

Why the map pack outranks everything you do on your website

Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey puts roughly 32% of map-pack ranking influence on Google Business Profile signals, about 20% on reviews, and around 15% on on-page website signals. Read that ordering carefully: your profile matters roughly twice as much as your website for local visibility.

That is an uncomfortable finding if you have just paid for a website redesign. It is very good news if you have ten minutes and a phone.

You do not need a shopfront to have a profile

This is the objection we hear most from consultants, designers and agencies working out of a home office or a coworking desk: 'we don't have an address we want to publish.' You don't need one. Google supports service-area businesses — you register with an address for verification, then hide it and publish only the areas you serve.

For a Pune business that usually means listing Baner, Kothrud, Wakad, Hinjewadi, Viman Nagar, Kalyani Nagar, Aundh, Hadapsar and Pimpri-Chinchwad as service areas. Customers see the coverage, not your kitchen table.

The five fields people get wrong

  • Primary category. This is the single strongest field in the profile. 'Marketing agency' and 'Internet marketing service' compete for different queries — pick the one your buyers actually type, not the one that sounds most impressive.
  • Business name. Use your real registered name. Stuffing it to 'Sharma Interiors - Best Interior Designer in Pune' is a guideline violation and competitors can and do report it.
  • Hours. An unfilled or wrong hours field suppresses you in 'open now' searches, which is a large share of near-me intent.
  • Photos. Profiles with regular photo uploads get materially more direction requests. Ten good photos beats a hundred stock ones.
  • Services and products. Almost nobody fills these in, which is exactly why they are worth filling in.

Reviews are the second-largest factor, and the only one you cannot fake

Around a fifth of local ranking weight sits in reviews — volume, recency and whether you reply. The practical system: ask every satisfied customer at the moment the work lands, send a direct review link over WhatsApp rather than explaining where to click, and reply to all of them, including the bad ones.

Two reviews a month, sustained, beats twenty reviews in one week followed by silence. Google reads the pattern, and so does anyone reading your profile.

What to do this week

  • Claim or verify the profile. It takes days, not minutes, so start it now.
  • Set primary category, service areas, hours, and write the description around what customers search for.
  • Upload ten real photos of real work.
  • Send review requests to your last five happy customers.
  • Add the profile URL to your website so the entity connects.

None of this needs a budget. It needs an afternoon and then fifteen minutes a week. It is, without much competition, the cheapest local visibility available to an Indian service business in 2026.
